Client: Ronny Chieng – Talent
The Daily Show has set its election night plans.
Comedy Central’s late night show will air a live special on Nov. 5, with Jon Stewart hosting and the Daily Show news team — Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic — providing updates and analysis on the presidential election, as well as “tips on surviving the post-election breakdown of society,” as the show puts it.
The special will run for an hour, twice the show’s normal length — with a title that’s many times the normal length. The special’s official name is (deep breath) The Daily Show Presents a Live Election Night Special With Jon Stewart: Indecision 2024: Nothing We Can Do About It Now. In addition to airing on Comedy Central, the special will simulcast on MTV, Paramount Network, TV Land, CMT, Pop and Logo.
The election night special will be the culmination of The Daily Show’s coverage of the 2024 campaign, including numerous field pieces and a week of episodes filmed in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention (the show scrapped plans to be in Milwaukee for July’s Republican Convention after an attempt on nominee Donald Trump’s life).
Supervising producer Elise Terrell told The Hollywood Reporter before the DNC that the shake-up in the campaign, with Vice President Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, had been invigorating for the show and its writers. “We were like, ‘All right, we know the jokes.’ We know what we’re going after, and of course we’ll always come up with new angles. But this is just such a wealth of new information and new reactions and new attacks that are fun for us to cover. … Being able to tackle all of the different angles that have been thrown our way has been really, really fun.”
Jen Flanz is the showrunner of The Daily Show and executive produces with Stewart and James “Baby Doll” Dixon.
