Adrian Guerra, producer of Rodrigo Cortes' "Buried" and "Red Lights," is launching service company Ylands for shoots on the Canary Islands, adding to the rapidly building industry on the Spanish archipelago located off the northwest coast of Africa.
Guerra will partner with Spanish producer Manuel Monzon ("Fermat's Room," "The Machinist") and Toni Novella, line-producer of Pedro Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In" and Steven Soderbergh's "Che: Guerrilla."
Based out of Barcelona and the Canaries' Las Palmas, Ylands is providing physical production services to films and TV series shooting on the islands, and advising on tax rebates and other local incentives, Guerra said.
Ylands' first service will be on Eugenio Mira's "Grand Piano," produced by Guerra and Cortes' Nostromo Pictures. Starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack, and sold by The Solution Entertainment Group, "Piano" will shoot in Las Palmas for two weeks in October.
The Canaries are made up of 13 islands that provide sub-tropical, desert, forest, snow and urban locations plus hotel and airport services developed by a strong tourist industry. The 38% tax incentives has been tapped by Warner Bros. on "Wrath of the Titans," Spain's Vaca and Morena Films for Iraq-set scenes in "Invasor," and Universal for "Fast and Furious 6."
Tax breaks are levied on Spanish production budgets of Canary shoots. To qualify, films must obtain Spanish nationality and a Canary Islands audiovisual work certificate. Ylands can advise on this, Guerra said.
"There's now a lot of demand from foreign companies to shoot in the Canaries but not so many specialized companies that can service such shoots," he added.
Born and bred in the Canary Islands, Guerra aims to help build an international shoot industry there, in a region of Spain with 30% plus unemployment.
Ylands will "complement" Nostromo productions. Three are in development, Guerra said. For Monzon, Ylands combines Guerra's "creative talent, imagination and international contacts with prestige producers and sales agents, Novella's ample, proven line-producer experience, tax incentives and natural shoot locations almost unique in Europe."
